Frequently Asked Questions
Most of us know the right actions to take in a range of social or work-related scenarios. But the internet has created scenarios that did not exist five years ago, so young people are facing situations without any experience on which to base their decision-making. CyberPass provides clarity by providing children with the necessary skills.
What is CyberPass?
CyberPass is a powerful education tool that covers all issues associated with e-safety, e-security, cyberbullying and digital citizenship. It has a range of scenarios which students respond. Based on their responses we can assess whether they understand each issue and have the necessary knowledge and skills, or whether they need to review further information (videos, interactives or checklists) before being presented with a second similar scenario.
We do not claim that CyberPass is a guarantee of safe and responsible online behaviour. We all have choice and sometimes we make wrong choices either intentionally or accidentally. But at the very least, CyberPass raises the issues and gets the discussion happening.
What does CyberPass cover?
CyberPass looks at all areas of digital and media literacy. Whilst e-safety and cyberbullying are of paramount importance and well covered in CyberPass, we believe that an overall understanding of technology is the only way to ensure that students (and adults) are safe and responsible users. We have taken a broad approach to the issue covering topics such as device settings, privacy, browsing and research, sharing files and other content, gaming, communicating, socialising and online finance transactions.
Remember, it’s not just about being a clever operator of technology, it is also about being a responsible user too.
Who should do CyberPass?
CyberPass is available in a range of different modules depending on the age of your child and/or their experience of the online world.
Basics - aimed at children in Grade 3 and up. If you're not sure, start here. You can always move up to Essentials.
Essentials - aimed at children in Grade 5 up or for younger children that have greater exposure to the online world. Also, a good place to start as an adult - you'll definitely learn something!
Advanced (coming soon) - for secondary students and independent users of online devices.
What do students do on CyberPass?
Children work through a range of interactive questions broken up into topic areas. The quizzes pose a range of online scenarios that the student responds to. They receive detailed feedback on all their responses and are provided additional information in the form of videos, games and checklists for questions they answered incorrectly. When they are ready they can re-sit the questions they got wrong and finish their CyberPass.
CyberPass is unique in that the student only has to re-sit questions they answered incorrectly and all support and education material is within the CyberPass website so you don’t have to send your students to external websites.
Can Teachers review their student’s progress?
Yes, this is a critical feature of CyberPass. Principals, Teachers and staff are provided logins to a reporting dashboard. We recommend that schools map students to specific Teachers so that each Teacher can track individual students or whole of class progress. Reports can be viewed at whole of school level right down to specific quiz responses by individual students.
Can Teachers do CyberPass?
Absolutely, and it’s free for Teachers and Staff once your school has subscribed. We would hope that all Teachers and Staff would have a go at completing CyberPass as it’s a useful and fun way of getting a conversation started about your student’s online activities. You may also learn something too.
